2010 is Year of the Young Child in Durham
Both the City of Durham and Durham County recognize the early childhood system and services to thousands of young children in the areas of quality early care and education, family support and health by proclaiming 2010 Year of the Young Child.
The Partnership accepted the Proclamation on behalf of Durham’s young children and their families and collaborating partner organizations, and groups focused on programming for young children birth to age 5 and their families.During the city event, Marsha Basloe, executive director of Durham's Partnership for Children, thanked Mayor Bell and all members of City Council: “You are making an investment in our future. Those children who are born today, will, if we do the right thing, be graduating from High School in the year 2028.” Basloe added, “On behalf of all young children and their families, the Partnership is grateful to the Mayor for his leadership and Council for their hard work on behalf of all citizens of Durham. This is the beginning of a great work we can do together. We thank you and look forward to future collaboration.”
This week, Partnership Chair Angie Welsh and Michael Palmer, immediate past chair, accepted the Proclamation also naming 2010 Year of the Young Child from Durham County Board of Commissioners. "This is a great opportunity for Durham's young children to be recognized as a vital piece of our community from both divisions of local government," said Welsh.
The Proclamations recognized high-quality early care and its critical role in supporting the current workforce and for building Durham’s future success, evidence-based, bilingual family support programs and vital health programs for young children and their families.
Mayor William V. (Bill) Bell said: "The City of Durham's Proclamation naming 2010 Years of the Young Child in Durham underscores the city's commitment in making young children a priority. Not only do the early years, from birth to age 5, represent the most critical time in children's development, their learning during this time is the foundation for later success in school and life. When we support young children, we support the stability of Durham families today and ensure a safer healthier and more viable community tomorrow."
Commissioner Chairman Michael Page said: "Durham County recognizes the importance of early childhood education and children's success in school and life is critical to our community's future. Durham County is supporting collaborative approaches to ensure government, schools, agencies and other service organizations have shared outcomes for school readiness and school success."
