Tuesdays for Tots - May 19, 2009
8:15 am - 12:30 pm
Tuesdays for Tots is Durhams Partnership for Children annual trip to the NC Legislature to advocate for young children. Tuesdays for Tots is critical to our advocacy efforts this legislative session because we stand to lose vital services to young children and their families due to the economic crisis and potential deep budget cuts. We invite you to join us May 19 from 8:15 am to 12:30 pm. The North Carolina Partnership for Children has obtained private funds for a large tour bus that seats 48 people. We will leave the front parking lot (1201 S. Briggs Ave) at 8:30 sharp and return before 1 p.m. We are planning on collective voices for young children (Board, Corporate Champions for Children, Funded Partners) representing Durham County to speak with our elected officials about the issues. Well have talking points and educational tools for you. Help us send the message that our children and their families must not endure any cuts to vital early care and education, family support programs and linkages to health services they needed to be successful in school and in life. If you are interested in attending please contact Karine Stallings 403-6960 x221 or Karine@dpfc.net to reserve space on the bus.
Thanks for all you do to support young children in Durham County!

Health outcome for young children exceeded thanks to collaborative focus
Durhams Partnership for Children and the Durham County Health Check Improvement Task Force have worked to make sure Durham County has not only met but exceeded the Health Check Medicaid outcome for children birth to age 5 enrolled in Medicaid and receiving well-child checkups.
Durhams Partnership for Children convenes and facilitates the Durham County Health Check Improvement Task Force to ensure young children are receiving preventive health care. The percentage of children enrolled in Medicaid and receiving well-child checkups is a performance indicator for receiving Smart Start funds. The number of children enrolled and receiving well-child checkups in Durham County has risen from 66% in FY 05/06 to 75% for FY 07/08.
Over the past year, the Task Force has focused on access to care, Medicaid participation rates, bilingual services and denied Medicaid claims. In addition to these focus areas, the Task Force reached several milestones:
Assisted in the creation of a bilingual Health Check Coordinator position.
Distributed a transportation flyer available as a resource for parents.
Distributed the Healthy Tomorrows video on the importance of Health Check and proper emergency room use to the Health Dept., Social Services and Direct Service Providers.
The Partnership for Children will be presenting these and other Health Check strategies and local collaborations at the 2009 National Smart Start conference in May.
